A few of us from the Correla team attended the Utility Week Forum last week to hear about the biggest challenges UK utilities face around strategic delivery as we move towards net zero. Two days of seminars where we got to listen to leading industry names talking about what we as an energy market need to do to make the required changes in infrastructure and how data, digitalisation and smart technology are vital in meeting our long-term goals.

One of the main messages is how quickly change is and needs to happen in the energy sector. How we need to innovate to do things differently, but truly understanding the smart technologies available, the capital investment, and resource required to deliver real results. To not be afraid to fail, but to quickly learn from what didn’t work and adjust accordingly.

A couple of key topics that stood out for us were:

1. Smart Metering and listening to Nigel Bessant at SSEN talk about how important smart meters are in their journey and their role in providing essential data that helps with valuable load projections and fault data. Installing smart meters into all customers’ homes is a fundamental part of learning about demand and planning for future solutions.

2. The adoption of greener technologies such as heat pumps and how we make that transition. A lot of research and testing is happening to determine the best heat pump solutions for not just those newer builds but our wide range of existing properties. Hydrogen and whether it is a viable alternative for the gas networks remains uncertain.

3. The importance of data, sharing data and implementing smart technologies and their role in guiding our future decisions around our transition and meeting demand requirements.

The core themes throughout were the capital investment required and how crucial it is to collaborate to deliver real change. Selecting partners that offer the agility and resources to move at the fast pace of our market.

At Correla, we are passionate about simplifying the large volumes of complex data and processes in the utilities market and wider energy industry. We partner with some of the leading UK meter operators to successfully deliver their smart meter installation plans and have supported in providing some considerable upscale and acceleration in their smart meter operations over the last 12 months, so we were excited to hear about the emphasis on data, digitalisation, and meeting smart meter objectives. We are continually looking at new and innovative solutions to support the industry in moving towards net zero and a more sustainable future.
